Air Pollution

Everyone needs air to breathe, and plants need it to make food. The atmosphere helps to regulate the climate. By polluting the air we are damaging this unique natural resource. Human processes such as burning fossil fuels in power stations and petrol in cars release many pollutants into the air, which cause acid rain, poor air quality and global warming. Pollutants like CFCs come from other human processes and damage the ozone layer.

We can reduce air pollution by becoming more energy efficient and using renewable energy resources which do not release air pollutants. We should also try to drive our cars less, which release a lot of harmful gases into the air. The international guide to sustainable development, Agenda 21, seeks to tackle the problem of air pollution in these ways.
