Agenda 21

When countries from all over the world came together at the Earth Summit in 1992 to discuss how to protect the environment, they produced a set of principles and actions that would guide the future development of countries. This was Agenda 21.

Agenda 21 encourages countries to reduce the amount of environmental pollution they cause, to conserve resources and to protect natural habitats and wildlife. However, spending money on protecting the environment should not be at the expense of society. Agenda 21 also calls for action to relieve poverty, tackle health problems, improve water resources and manage agriculture. The three main polluting activities of society, energy, transport and waste, should be developed in such a way that both the state of the environment and the quality of people's lives are improved.
