Global Climate

Different weather defines different climates all over the world. However, scientists sometimes like to describe the climate of the whole Earth, for example when they are looking at climate change. The climate of the whole Earth is called the global climate.

One of the reasons the Earth is suitable for life is because most places are warmer than the freezing point of water (0°C), and all places are colder than water's boiling point (100°C). Liquid water is necessary for almost all living things. In fact the average temperature of the Earth is now about 15°C. If the Earth did not have an atmosphere it would be -18°C. Greenhouse gases in the air trap extra heat and keep the planet warm. Unfortunately, mankind is polluting the air and increasing the amount of greenhouse gases, which may be causing global warming.
